Laptop Charging Port Not Working? Common Causes
4 min read
If your laptop only charges at an angle, or will not charge at all, the charging port is often to blame. Here are the most common causes and how we fix them.
A laptop that only charges when the cable is held at just the right angle — or will not charge at all — is a very common fault. In most cases the problem is the charging port, not the battery or the charger.
Why charging ports fail
Charging ports take a lot of mechanical stress. Over time the solder joints crack, the connector wears, or the internal pins bend. On USB-C laptops, a damaged or contaminated port can stop the laptop charging entirely.
Common causes
- Broken solder joints on the DC jack.
- Worn or damaged connector from repeated use.
- A failed charging IC on the motherboard.
- Debris or damage inside a USB-C port.
- Power rail faults preventing the battery from charging.
How we diagnose it
We test your charger and battery first, so you do not pay for the wrong repair. Then we inspect the port and solder joints, and check the charging circuit on the board. In most cases the port can be re-soldered or replaced without changing the whole motherboard.
Don't ignore it
A loose charging port gets worse over time and can damage the motherboard. If your laptop is charging intermittently, book a charging port repair before it stops charging completely.
