Laptop Overheating: Common Causes and Solutions

4 min read

An overheating laptop can shut down, slow down and shorten its own life. Here are the most common causes and how we fix them.

An overheating laptop is more than an annoyance. Heat causes the laptop to slow down to protect itself, shut down unexpectedly, and over time it can damage the processor and motherboard.

Common causes

  • Dust build-up blocking the cooling fins and fans.
  • Dried-out thermal paste between the processor and heatsink.
  • A failing or noisy fan that no longer moves enough air.
  • A worn hinge or damaged chassis restricting airflow.
  • Heavy workloads on a laptop with weak cooling.

What you can do

Keep the laptop on a hard, flat surface rather than a bed or cushion, and avoid blocking the vents. If the fans are clearly struggling, a professional clean and thermal paste replacement usually makes a big difference.

How we fix it

We clean the cooling system, replace the thermal paste, test the fans and check the temperatures under load. For most laptops this restores safe, quiet running.
