Why Won't My Laptop Turn On?

4 min read

A laptop that won't power on is one of the most common faults we see. This guide walks through the likely causes and what to check before booking a repair.

A laptop that will not turn on is one of the most common faults we see at Computer Surgery. It can be anything from a flat battery to a serious motherboard fault — so a proper diagnosis matters.

Start with the simple things

Before assuming the worst, check the basics. Is the charger working and firmly connected? Try a different wall socket. If your laptop has a removable battery, hold the power button down for 30 seconds with the charger unplugged, then reconnect and try again.

Common causes

  • A failed charger or charging port — the laptop never receives power.
  • A dead or swollen battery — the laptop runs only on wall power, or not at all.
  • A power rail or motherboard fault — power reaches the board but is not distributed correctly.
  • A stuck power button or keyboard controller fault.
  • Liquid damage causing a short on the motherboard.

What to check

If the charging light does not come on at all, the charger or charging port is the likely culprit. If lights come on but there is no display, the fault may be on the motherboard or screen side. Either way, stop trying to force it — repeated power attempts can cause further damage.

When to book a repair

If the simple checks do not help, bring it in for a professional diagnostic. We test the charger, battery and power rails to find the exact cause before recommending a repair.
